While I was in an aisle contemplating whether the spinning entertainer saucer or bouncer entertainer was better, a lady came up to me to ask a question about a product.
She smiled and said, "So, is your baby.... a boy or a girl?" I looked at him... and back at her... and said, "Boy."
Now, Please picture this.... a dark blue, light blue and white striped t-shirt with the big words ALL STAR and pictures of a baseball, football, and basketball on it. (Kinda the most generic BOY clothing in the WORLD!) So, I guess I am laughing because this is Not the first time I have been asked this question while he is wearing a lot of blue, or just totally boyish looking clothes and has a blue blanket and is sitting in a blue carseat.... (not that girls can't have those.... it is just less common, I suppose.) I personally think he looks All Boy no matter what... and it's not like I dress him in yellow or green mid-gender things often.... or at all for that matter.

Well, I figured since these people are being "over-polite," not wanting to assume, they are probably just trying to avoid moments like this.....

A few years ago, while I was working at Los Hermanos in Provo as a server, a small family came in with two little children. One needed a highchair and kids menu. I kindly asked, "Would she like some crackers to snack on before the food comes out?" I noticed them looking at me a bit strangely as they said yes please. I walked away nervous. What did I do wrong? When I came back cheerfully delivering the crackers and water, the mom, with a glare and snooty tone, remarked, "Does my son really look like a girl?" I looked at "him" in the highchair again and quickly brushed it off saying- "Oh, I'm sorry, I wasn't really paying attention earlier. He is so cute!" The mom, gave a rude huff, and looked away from me. The dad felt bad for the awkwardness and said, "Oh, it's probably because we haven't dared cut his hair yet."
Yes, that's probably it. His beautiful long blond curly hair hanging over his ears, along with the white T-shirt under the old-school Turquoise Overalls with a big PINK BEAR on them. Hmmm. I guess I should've known.
I was mortified and asked several other servers behind the scenes to look at the kid and tell me whether they thought it was a boy or girl. THEY ALL SAID GIRL!!
And they didn't leave me a tip. HOW RUDE!
So, yes, when I see a baby hidden under a green or yellow blanket I might ask the same. But strange how these people don't even pretend to figure it out on there own here. I think I am making it pretty obvious.

looks pretty obvious to me, but I guess I would have to see him in person first before I could tell you for sure :) lets plan that.
P.s you are right, I do need to update my blog, my life is boring!
When Brianne was about 16 months old we went on a quick trip to the Bay area where we considered moving. That is where we had our one (and only) incident of someone assuming the wrong sex of our child. She was wearing plain blue denim overalls which could be deceiving, but the shirt underneath had a really cute feminine collar with giant yellow daisies all across. It didnt offend me that they thought my daughter was a boy, but I did think it was odd - why would i put my boy in a flowered shirt? I guess in San Fran they see a lot worse than that LOL !
That is so funny. Working in pediatrics I see that happen all the time. Some kids you just can't tell but to me your boy looks all boy!!! He is so cute.
he definitely looks all boy:) and some people are just clueless. and oblivious. but he definitely does not look like a girl!!
I got the same questions with my oldest. His curly hair confused a lot of people!
